How to Get Your Driver’s License in Ontario: A Simple Guide by Sun Driving Academy

Getting your driver’s licence in Ontario is a big milestone. The process is straightforward once you understand the steps and the costs involved. At Sun Driving Academy, we guide students from their first written test all the way to their full G licence with confidence.

This guide breaks it down clearly.

Step 1: Check if You’re Eligible

To apply for a driver’s licence in Ontario, you must:

  • Be at least 16 years old

  • Be an Ontario resident

  • Provide original ID (passport, PR card, etc.)

  • Pass a vision test

Step 2: Get Your G1 Licence (Written Test) + Fees

Your journey starts with the G1 licence.

What you need to do:

  • Visit a DriveTest centre

  • Take the knowledge test (rules of the road + road signs)

  • Pass a vision test

  • Pay the required fees

2026 fees for a Class G licence:

  • G1 licence package (written test + your first G2 road test + 5-year licence): $159.75

  • Knowledge test re-attempt (if you need another try): $16.00

  • G2 road test (included in the G1 package but charged separately if retaking): $53.75

  • Five-year licence fee: $90.00

  • G road test (final test to get your full licence): $91.25

After passing, you’ll receive your G1 licence.

G1 Licence Rules

With a G1 licence:

  • You must drive with a fully licensed driver (4+ years experience)

  • Zero alcohol allowed

  • No 400-series highways unless with an instructor

  • Some late-night restrictions may apply

Step 3: Learn & Practice (8–12 Months)

You must hold your G1 for:

  • 12 months, or

  • 8 months if you complete a government-approved driver education course

At Sun Driving Academy, our MTO-approved Beginner Driver Education program helps you:

  • Reduce your waiting time

  • Learn defensive driving skills

  • Prepare properly for your road test

  • Possibly qualify for insurance discounts

Step 4: G2 Road Test

Once you’ve met the waiting period:

  • Book your G1 exit (G2) road test

  • Bring a safe, insured vehicle

  • Demonstrate basic driving skills, parking, and road awareness

Book your test here:

If you need to retake this test, each attempt costs $53.75. Your first attempt is included in the G1 package.

Passing this test gives you your G2 licence, allowing you to drive alone.

Step 5: Get Your Full G Licence

After holding your G2 for 12 months, you can book your final road test:

  • Highway driving

  • Lane changes

  • Merging and defensive driving

The fee for the G road test (to upgrade from G2 to full G) is $91.25.

Once you pass, you receive your full G licence with no graduated restrictions.
